Being a reader is often seen as a joyful and fulfilling identity, but it’s not always as simple as it sounds.
Sometimes, the world of books can feel overwhelming. The sheer volume of unread books, the fear of not knowing enough, or the pressure to sound “intellectual” can create doubt. If you’ve ever felt this way, know that you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, and here’s what I’ve learned to help overcome these feelings.
1. Mind Blocks Are Normal
It’s okay to feel stuck or experience moments when your mind goes blank during conversations about books. These blocks are temporary and happen to everyone. When this happens, pause, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that it’s okay to not have all the answers immediately. Give yourself time to think—it’s not a race.
2. You Don’t Have to Know Everything
The world of books is infinite, and no one can read or know it all. If someone mentions a book or topic you’re unfamiliar with, see it as an opportunity to learn. It’s perfectly fine to say, “That’s new to me. I’d love to explore it!” This shows curiosity, which is far more valuable than pretending to know everything.
3. Sluttering Isn’t a Weakness
If you, like me, sometimes stumble over words or lose your train of thought, don’t let that define how you see yourself. Speaking with confidence takes time and practice. Start small—talk to yourself while reading or share your thoughts with a close friend. Gradually, you’ll notice an improvement. Your love for books will always shine through, even if you stumble over words sometimes.
4. Don’t Fear Other Readers
It’s easy to feel intimidated by people who seem to know more or speak more fluently about books. But remember, most readers are passionate, not judgmental. They’re not trying to test you; they just want to share their love for stories. Think of these conversations as exchanges of ideas, not competitions.
5. Celebrate Your Journey
Your growth as a reader is unique. Whether you’re just starting out or have been reading for years, every step matters. The questions you ask, the books you explore, and the reflections you share are proof that you’re constantly evolving.
6. It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed
Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you care deeply. Acknowledge your feelings, but don’t let them stop you. Take one book at a time, one conversation at a time.
Being a reader isn’t about knowing everything or always having the perfect words. It’s about the love for stories, the curiosity to learn, and the courage to share your thoughts, even when it feels overwhelming. You are enough, and your voice matters.
